THE NIGERIAN STOCK EXCHANGE MARKET REPORT FOR JULY 8th – 12th, 2024

Equity Turnover :

Last week on the floor of the Exchange, investors traded a total turnover of 2.765 billion shares worth N85.230 billion in 40,796 deals. This represents an increase in value compared to the previous week, where 2.259 billion shares valued at N31.166 billion were exchanged in 42,851 deals.

The Financial Services Industry dominated the activity chart, leading by volume with 1.892 billion shares worth N24.326 billion traded in 21,447 deals. This industry contributed 68.42% to the total equity turnover volume and 28.54% to the value. Following the Financial Services Industry, the Agriculture Industry recorded 388.212 million shares worth N1.539 billion in 1,865 deals. The Utilities Industry came in third, with a turnover of 121.608 million shares valued at N50.613 billion in 627 deals.

Among the top equities traded last week were Fidelity Bank Plc, Ellah Lakes Plc and
Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc. Together, these three equities accounted for 1.335 billion shares worth N16.052 billion in 4,562 deals, contributing 48.29% to the total equity turnover volume and 18.83% to the value.

Summary of Price Changes :

Last week, Thirty-four (34) equities appreciated in price, which is lower than the thirty-seven (37) equities that appreciated the previous week. Conversely, Thirty-eight (38) equities depreciated in price, lower than forty-five (45) equities that saw a price drop the previous week. Meanwhile, eighty-two (82) equities remained unchanged, higher than the seventy- two (72) recorded in the previous week.

Among the top price gainers, Livestock feeds Plc. led with an opening price of N1.85, closing price of N2.35 and a 27.03 % change in price. Following closely was Associated Bus Company Plc, with its price rising from N0.64 to N0.77 with a change in price of 20.31%. ETERNA Plc also saw significant gains, opening at N15.20 and closing at N18.00 and 18.42% change.

On the flip side, the top losers included Africa Prudential Plc, Thomas Wyatt Nig. Plc, and PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc. Africa Prudential Plc price fell from N9.00 to N7.40, marking a -17.78% change. Thomas Wyatt Nig. Plc dropped from N2.40 to N2.16, with a -10.00% change, and PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc decreased from N22.00 to N19.80, reflecting a -10.00% change.

Conclusion :

The week saw a mixed performance in the equities market with notable activity in the Financial Services Industry. While the number of gainers decreased, there was a significant decrease in the number of equities that depreciated in value. Investors remain active, focusing on top equities and navigating the fluctuations in the market. As the market continues to evolve, these dynamics highlight the ever-changing landscape of equity trading and investment.
